Light and Shadow of Democratization in Myanmar: Medical Care for Burmese Refugees

At the time of making this video (2012), Myanmar was undergoing a major transition toward democracy. However at the Mae Tao Clinic, located near the border between Thailand and Myanmar, the number of patients fleeing Myanmar to receive medical care continued to increase.

Since its establishment in 1989, the Mae Tao Clinic has been providing necessary medical care to Burmese people who have fled to Thailand due to persecution and oppression by the military regime in their country, and also to those who cannot receive medical care in their country due to poverty.

The Mae Tao Clinic receives up to 150,000 patients a year. The clinic not only serves patients suffering from diarrhoea, pneumonia, and malaria, but also victims of landmines. This place is a lifeline for those who do not have access to necessary medical care in Myanmar.

This video highlights the activities of the Mae Tao Clinic and the crisis they were facing at the time.
