What would you do if you were suddenly told that your child might have Down Syndrome?

This article is an interview with Eri Ara, a woman raising a one-year-old girl with Down Syndrome; Aiko.

Eri says, “Like many parents, I went through a period of darkness.” But now, when Eri posts a photo of Aiko’s dazzling smile on Instagram, she always adds the following hashtag: “#theluckyfew”.

This is the story of Eri and Aiko’s one year and eight months together. But at the same time, it is not just the story of them. It is a story that is relevant to the families of the approximately 2,200 children born with Down Syndrome each year (approximately 6 children born each day), and those of us who live in the same society as these children.
